VPN - Virtual Private Network

This guide is directed at students and describes, how you can access certain of VIA's IT-services from home by using VPN.

VPN or Virtual Private Network is the term used for a technique which is used to create connections to systems and services that normally would only be available for you when logged on to a certain network (in this case VIA Wi-Fi). The purpose of VPN is to make it possible to gain a secure access to VIA's systems and services even though, you are located outside the address of VIA or outside VIA Wi-Fi.

To be able to log in to VPN, a prerequisite is that you have installed two-factor authentication. See the guide here for further instructions.

Expand or collapse content Download VIAs VPN on your computer

To download the VIA VPN, you need to:

  1. Go to vpn.via.dk/viastud.
  2. Enter your VIAmail ([email protected]) as your login.
  3. Select Next.
  1. Enter your password.
  2. Select Sign in.

If you are not logged in to VIA's network, you will be asked to perform two-factor authentication for your login.

Expand or collapse content If you do not have permission to use VIA's VPN as a student, you will encounter this error message.
  1. Click the blue “Download for Windows” button, or “Download for macOS” if you are using a MacBook.
  2. You can view instructions on how to download and install the file by clicking the “+ Instructions” button.
Expand or collapse content Connect to VIAs VPN

The following guide shows how to connect on a Windows computer. For MacBook, see the Mac section.

  1. Open VIA's VPN by clicking Start.
  2. Start typing "Cisco".
  3. Select Cisco Secure Client.
  1. Enter vpn.via.dk/viastud and then click Connect.

Please note! When connecting to the VPN, you will lose the connection to active systems on your computer for up to one minute, after which the connection will be re-established. You may see various pop-up windows during this time; simply ignore them.

You are now logged into VIA's network, as if you were physically present at a VIA location.

  1. You can tell you are connected via VPN when you see a padlock on the VIAvpn icon in the taskbar at the bottom right corner of your computer.
  2. To disconnect from the VPN, right-click the Cisco Secure icon in the taskbar at the bottom right corner of your computer and select "VPN Disconnect".

A prerequisite for logging into this VPN connection is that you are studying at:

  • Socialrådgiveruddannelsen
  1. You open VIAvpn by clicking on Start.
  2. Start typing 'Cisco'.
  3. Select 'Cisco Secure Client'
  1. Make sure to type vpn.via.dk/via-internet and click ”Connect”.
  1. Log in with your VIA ID.
  2. Confirm your login with two-factor authentication.

Please note! By connecting to VPN you will lose the connection to any running systems on your computer for about 1 minute. Afterwards, the connection will be re-established. When you lose the connection to the systems, different pop-up windows may be generated. These should however, just be ignored.

  1. When a padlock is shown on the VIAvpn icon at the bottom right corner of the screen, you have been connected through VPN.
  1. In order to exit the VPN connection, right-hand click at the Cisco Secure icon at the bottom right corner of your computer and select ”VPN Disconnect”.

  1. Select the magnifying glass (Spotlight search function) in the top right corner and search for Cisco.
  2. Select Cisco Secure Client.
  3. Select 'Connect'.
  4. Log in with your VIA ID.
  5. Confirm your login with 2-factor authentication.

Please note! By connecting to VPN you will lose the connection to any running systems on your computer for about 1 minute. Afterwards, the connection will be re-established. When you lose the connection to the systems, different pop-up windows may be generated. These should however, just be ignored.
